Shaft Skinz Innovative golf accessory

I kind of fell into starting a business in the golf industry......and it took over my life.

As a lover of golf I had been noticing that (graphite) shafts were becoming more decorative in their design and golfers were starting buy clubs in part because of the look of the shaft.

I combined my knowledge of shrink-sleeving with what I was seeing as an emerging consumer ‘desire’ - people increasingly choosing to express themselves through their choices - and created a product I branded ‘Shaft Skinz’.

I created samples with a UK supplier and proved my concept through brief consumer research. The creation of the brand mark and the graphics for unique pack structures (which I also designed) saw me ready to go and ‘sell my wares’. When 13 of the first 15 shops I walked into bought product I new I was on to something!

The 1st PGA Tour professional to use Shaft Skinz - Rory Sabbatini

In order to promote the product (without any budget to speak of) I went to the top of the game to see if the professional players would both use them and let me promote that fact.

At the first PGA Tour event I got 5 players including the defending Champion, Rory Sabbatini (pictured) to use the product. Their images went straight on the website!

In all I managed to get 98 tour pros from various Tours around the world.

A visit to the world’s largest golf expo in Florida allowed me to research my product more fully. I also saw calls for participants in a new golf inventions show (Fore Inventors Only, Golf Channel) which I entered - eventually reaching the top 10 of 1,400 entires! I also took part in an online spin off of Dragon’s Den

Just a few of the touring pros to use Shaft Skinz
I developed manufacturing in the US and struck deals with sales partners in Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, India, Australia and UK and set up several sales reps in the United States who I managed. The global downturn in 2008 saw sales drop off and I sold the brand, the stock and the trademarks shortly after. It remains the biggest learning experience of my career as I have now walked in the shoes of my clients and am wiser for it!
